Bursting Standard
International testing protocols provide a uniform method for measuring the resistance of board to a hydraulic pressure applied through a rubber diaphragm. The standard iso 2759 specifies the apparatus and procedure for determining the bursting strength of paperboard and corrugated fibreboard. It applies to materials with a bursting strength between 350 kilopascals and 5500 kilopascals.
This measurement provides a proxy for the ability of the material to withstand internal or external pressures during transit.
Technical Procedure
Clamping force and the rate of pressure increase are precisely defined to ensure reproducibility across different laboratories. Under the rules of iso 2759, a test piece is held firmly between two circular plates while a fluid-filled diaphragm distends against the surface until the material ruptures. The peak pressure recorded at the moment of failure defines the burst value for that specific sample.
Calibration of the pressure gauges and the condition of the rubber diaphragm are essential for maintaining the accuracy of the results. Variations in the clamping pressure can alter the outcome by allowing the board to slip.
Physical Toughness
Physical toughness is a requirement for secondary packaging that must survive stacking and rough handling. Compliance with iso 2759 allows manufacturers to guarantee that a specific grade of board meets the durability requirements for shipping containers. It is often cited in trade contracts to define the minimum performance of the material.
