Testing Protocol
Standardized measurement provides a consistent method for evaluating the force required to peel a flexible adherend from a rigid substrate at a right angle. Known formally as astm d6862, this protocol specifically addresses the resistance of a bond when the peeling force is applied perpendicularly to the bond line. It is frequently used to test the adhesion of decorative laminates or foils to paperboard.
The results are reported as force per unit width.
Peel Resistance
Procedure requires a constant rate of extension to ensure that the data remains comparable across different batches of material. A loading jig holds the rigid panel while the flexible layer is pulled away at exactly ninety degrees. This setup minimizes the influence of the backing material stiffness on the final reading.
Variations in the grip pressure can also affect the alignment and lead to premature failure at the start of the peel. Practitioners rely on the average force calculated over the middle portion of the total peel distance to represent the true bond performance.
Surface Interaction
Material preparation is restricted to specific widths to avoid edge effects that might skew the data. The method stops being reliable if the flexible member tears before the bond fails. In many packaging applications, the bond strength exceeds the internal strength of the paperboard itself.
Failure then occurs within the paper fibres rather than at the adhesive interface.
