Analytical Protocol
Standardized testing procedures for determining the water vapor transmission rate of packaging materials utilize an electrolytic detection method. The execution of iso 15106 3 provides a precise measurement of moisture flow through plastic films, polymer-coated paperboards and multi-layer barrier sheets. This method requires a temperature-controlled test chamber where the sample acts as a barrier between dry and humid cavities.
Measurement Technology
Sensor sensitivity in this test setup relies on an electrolytic cell that detects moisture. During the test, carrier gas sweeps the permeated water vapor from the dry chamber into the cell, where phosphoric acid absorbs it. Application of an electric voltage electrolyzes the water into hydrogen and oxygen, creating an electric current that is proportional to the moisture volume.
This electrochemical measurement provides a highly accurate reading even for materials with very low permeability.
Barrier Assessment
Quality control in high-barrier food packaging depends on these measurements to predict product shelf life. Since polymer-coated board must prevent dry foods from absorbing moisture, iso 15106 3 allows packaging designers to compare different coating materials. This evaluation guides the selection of barrier layers for dry goods and frozen foods.
Reliable barrier data ensures that products remain fresh and dry throughout the distribution chain.
