French Regulation
National standards in France define the physical and chemical requirements for plastic and paperboard materials to be classified as compostable at ambient temperatures. The NF T51-800 standard provides a rigorous testing framework that evaluates the biodegradation, disintegration, and plant toxicity of packaging in domestic composting heaps. This standard is highly influential across Europe and is often used by manufacturers who wish to sell their compostable packaging in the French market.
It applies to flexible bags, catering items, and polymer-coated paperboards designed for household disposal.
Technical Standard
Specific laboratory trials assess the behavior of the packaging material over a period of twelve months. In accordance with NF T51-800, biodegradation must be verified at twenty-five degrees Celsius, which simulates the average conditions of a home compost heap. Disintegration tests must show that at least ninety percent of the material passes through a two-millimeter sieve after six months of composting.
This ensures that the material does not leave persistent macro-fragments in the finished soil amendment.
Market Access
Converting companies utilize this certification to design compostable shipping envelopes and food wrappers for the European retail sector. It provides a clear legal basis for environmental claims in a highly regulated market. Compliance with this standard prevents fines under French anti-waste laws.
