Operational Throughput
Efficiency ratings of a converting machine during the high speed folding and sealing of carton blanks quantify the compatibility of the board with the finishing equipment. Stable folder-gluer runnability allows a production line to maintain maximum velocity without frequent stops for jams or misaligned boxes. This property is a function of board stiffness and dimensional stability.
It determines the total daily output of a packaging facility.
Substrate Interaction
Friction levels on the surface of the paperboard must fall within a narrow window to ensure proper feeding. If folder-gluer runnability is compromised by a coating that is too slippery, the blanks will slide out of alignment before the glue is applied. Conversely, a surface that is too rough may cause double feeds or tearing in the vacuum section.
Static electricity often acts as a hidden variable that disrupts the flow of material.
Adhesive Performance
Setting times for the cold glue or hot melt must match the physical speed of the transport belts. Poor folder-gluer runnability results when the adhesive does not bond quickly enough to hold the carton shape as it exits the compression section. This leads to open flaps or fish-tailing where the carton is glued at an incorrect angle.
Proper creasing depth ensures that the panels fold exactly along the intended lines. The moisture content of the board stays as a primary factor in how the material responds to the mechanical stress of the folding shoes.
