Industry Protocol
Standardized testing procedures for determining the edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard provide a precise method for quality verification. The tappi t 811 standard uses a short column test with waxed edges to ensure the failure occurs in the center of the sample rather than at the contact points. This method is the primary reference for the american packaging industry and is used to calculate the stackability of most transport cartons.
Sample Preparation
Success in the test depends on cutting the samples with perfectly parallel edges to avoid localized pressure. Under tappi t 811, the specimen is placed between two flat platens and compressed until the structure collapses. The results are reported in kilonewtons per meter and are used to certify that a corrugated board meets the burst and compression requirements of carrier regulations.
Technical Precision
Modern laboratories use automated testing machines to eliminate human error during the compression cycle. Because the tappi t 811 method is so sensitive to the physical state of the board, the samples must be conditioned at fifty percent relative humidity for at least twenty four hours before the test. This ensures that the moisture content of the paper does not skew the results.
